A continued care prescription may be issued by your pharmacist when your usual prescriber is unavailable and it is a medication that you need to take on a regular basis to treat a chronic condition like diabetes or high blood pressure. Working with your usual prescriber, the pharmacist can provide you with needed medication to avoid an interruption in your treatment. Continued care prescriptions however, cannot be issued for narcotic and other controlled drugs.

Provide you with a particular brand of the medication you use
In some cases, a drug is available from several different pharmaceutical manufacturers. If you or your prescriber have a preference for a particular brand of the drug, your pharmacist can provide you with that brand. In this case, the pharmacist will order a “no substitution” of the medication you or the prescriber prefer. It is important to know that your preferred brand of the drug may not be one that is covered by your drug plan.
Prescribe non-prescription or over-the-counter medications and medical devices such as diabetic supplies and metered-dose inhaler-spacer devices
Consulting with your pharmacist when you require a non-prescription medication helps you to select the best medication for you. It also helps to avoid harmful effects caused by drug interactions with your medication therapy or worsening of your medical conditions. In those situations where you may need to have a non-prescription medication or medical device prescribed for you, your pharmacist can now provide this service.
